PBA is a voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organisation founded in 2003 and officially registered with the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC-2004) on 24 August 2004 in Khartoum. PBA was founded as a result of the "Youth Peace Building Initiative" project, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and implemented by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in partnership with Azza Women Association (AWA) and the University of Juba between 2002 and 2003.
Since its foundation, PBA has worked effectively with communities in Sudan to spread the message of peace, disseminate values of peaceful co-existence, and build capacities to transform conflict and promote social cohesion and integration among Sudanese communities. PBA's programmes emphasise the role of youth, children and women, working across development, peace building, human rights, education, and capacity building — targeting disadvantaged youth, women and children from diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
All PBA members are trained in peace building, conflict resolution and Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) methods as a requirement for joining the association. They have also received intensive training in organisational management under the Civil Society Development Project and Capacity Development Project, implemented in partnership with the IRC, the German Development Service (DED), IOM and UNDP between 2004 and 2015.
PBA leads the sustainable development process in Sudan through creating a peaceful and harmonious community with a culture of acceptance of the other.
PBA is devoted to reducing tension and conflict among Sudanese communities by improving the situation of local communities — including youth, children and women living in difficult circumstances — through lifesaving projects and sustainable humanitarian solutions across peace building, food security & livelihoods, WASH, education, protection and community development.
